James Bond and The Seamaster Omega Watch relationship started in 1995 with Pierce Brosnan, the 007 agent in GoldenEye.
Take note, this was a bold change from the Rolex watches, worn by the prior James Bonds; played by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, and Roger Moore.
The change was based on a decision made by Lindy Hemming, James Bond’s costume designer in GoldenEye. Unlike in the 1960’s, Hemming thought the Rolex became too common and not distinctive enough for James Bond. Lindy made an executive decision and switched things up to Switzerland based watch manufacture,The Omega. This gave our new James a more ‘Euro’ and sophisticated look. The aim was for a newer and minimul British Gentleman, a persona necessary for Bond.
In GoldenEye, James Bond wore The Omega Seamaster Pro, model number 2541.80.
Now in Bond’s next three films, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, Brosnan made a slight change and worn a different watch, the Omega Seamaster Professional Automatic, version model # 2531.80. A Blue Bezel, Steel Bracelet Professional Chronometer.
There are very subtle and minor changes in the two watches, one being that the Omega worn in GoldenEye was a battery operated Quartz, while the next three had the Automatic technology, but besides that, nothing very noticeable (though a ~$400 price difference). Both watches did sport the blue Bezel and a stainless steel bracelet.
In 2006 James Bond premiered in a new film, Casino Royal. This came with it new actor, Daniel Craig, and with him a new Seamaster Omega Watch.
The Seamaster Pro was replaced with the Omega Semaster Planet Ocean Big Size 2900.50.91 model. This watch has a 45.5 millimeters diameter and for the first time in the Omega / James Bond relationship, Bond wore a rubber strapped Seamaster Omega.
The second watch in Casino Royal was the 2220.80 300m. This was a smaller size, a case diameter of 41mm compared to the Planet Ocean’s 45.5mm.
The 300m, Ref# 2220.80, is also a stainless steel bracelet version, while the Planet Ocean, Ref # 2900.50.91, had a rubber strap.
Notably, The Omega Men’s Seamaster Planet Ocean Automatic Chronometer Watch #2900.50.91 has received nothing but the best of reviews.
Yet in James Bond’s 2008 move, Quantum of Solace, Daniel Craig sports a brand new never before seen Seamaster Omega Watch model. This Omega is still a Planet Ocean; The 600m Co-Axial Chronometer #2201.50.00 model, with a blank dial and steel bracelet.
If you are a Bond fan or an Omega enthusiasts, you will know this is the first time 007 has worn a stainless steel bracelet with a black dial. Bond has been wearing stainless steel Seamasters the feature the classic blue dials since 1995. The Seamaster Planet Ocean in Quantum of Solace is a big change for James Bond
Most of the models mentioned above do come in a Limited Edition. Omega limited these Seamasters to 10,007, making them instant hard to find collectors items.
